The primary duty of the APRN is to care for Observation class patients admitted from the Emergency Department (ED) to the Clinical Decision Unit (CDU). These patients are admitted under fairly restrictive protocols and are expected to be treated and discharged within 24 hours of admission. The APRN is responsible for documenting on the patient (H and P, progress notes, discharge summaries) and determining a plan of care in conjunction with the admitting physician and informed by the evidence-based protocolized care plans. While there is continuous in-house physician support, most of the patient care will be provided by the APRN. Examples of commonly used protocols are Chest Pain (ACS rule out), CHF exacerbation, asthma exacerbation, TIA, syncope and dehydration. The CDU operates 24/7/365 as a flexible and valuable arm of the UAMS Emergency Medicine Service Line, providing efficient and effective care for the community. The secondary duty of the APRN would be to work occasional shifts in the ED, taking care of undifferentiated patients in an outpatient setting, under the direct supervision of attending physicians. There are also opportunities for data analysis, research and administrative responsibilities as a member of the care team in an innovative, forward thinking, patient centered and data driven unit."
